Guide to DC Public Library Card

Updated: Jun 28

The DC Public Library system offers an array of resources to DC residents free of cost. Any district resident can gain access to these resources with a DC Public Library card.

A DC Public Library card grants you access to the following:

  • eBooks and magazines

  • Educational material

  • Language learning

  • Online Newspaper

  • Job resources - in person and online

  • Research material

  • Library events

Below you will find our Guide meant to help you navigate the different ways you can obtain a library card.

How to Obtain a card

There are two main ways to obtain a card. You can visit any of the 26 DC Public Libraries in the system to apply for a card or you can complete an online application that grants you access to a digital card ready to use virtually.

In Person

Need assistance with planning your visit or finding a location near you, take a look at the plan your visit page at https://www.dclibrary.org/plan-visit. Here you will be able to locate libraries near you, access times of operation, and obtain contact information.

Staff will be able to assist with obtaining a card. To ensure a smooth application process make sure you have your DC State ID with you.

Online

Alternatively, applicants can use the online Get a Card Portal to apply for a library card. Use the interactive tool below to get a step-by-step guide with the online application.
